Ivan White was born in Stephenville on January 31st, 1943. He comes from a long line of fiddlers: His father, grandfather, and great-grandfather all played. His family has lived for several generations in Stephenville and traces its ancestry back to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Ivan was an assistant operator at the local paper mill for many years.
Collector’s Note: Ivan told me that many of his tunes may have originally come from Cape Breton, although in one instance, he played “an old French tune” in response to my request for local music. Ivan played the fiddle left-handed without switching the strings around. The fiddle string arrangement is essentially upside down from that of a right-handed player.
