Freeman Cull

The Fiddle Music of Newfoundland and Labrador

Freeman Cull was born on January 11, 1924, in Island Bight, later resettling at Goose Cove, near St. Anthony, where he lived as a fisherman. He passed away in 1988.

Collector’s Note: Free played a few tunes for me on the fiddle one afternoon in his home. His hands were swollen and arthritic from years of fishing, and he explained that he “got a job to remember it now.” I did, however, get several little gems from him that day. He said they were tunes from his grandfather. Free’s wife Lori told me that I “should have heard him one time. He only had to hear a tune once to learn it.” He was once a good accordion player as well. Free also played Off She Goes, Strip the Willow.
