Bill White

The Fiddle Music of Newfoundland and Labrador

Collector’s Note: I first heard the name of this fiddler from Rufus Guinchard, who referred to him as” Old Bill White from Sandy Cove.” Rufus knew him well and even had a tune named for him. When I visited William White one afternoon in 1978, he was well into his 80s and feeble. With the help of daughters and a granddaughter, “Poppy” got set up on the couch with his fiddle. He played four tunes, three of which I identified as ones Rufus Guinchard played. I didn’t recognize the fourth and was unable to transpose it. I borrowed transcriptions from Rufus Guinchard for three of Bill’s four tunes.

A photo of a much younger William White features on the cover of Close to the Floor by Colin Quigley
