Acknowledgements

  • The Newfoundland & Labrador Arts Council – In 2024/25, I was awarded a Senior Artist Grant, under Year of the Arts funding from the Government of NL.
This afforded me the time and resources needed to complete this project.

  • The Canada Council – In 1978 I was awarded a grant of $2,000 to seek out fiddlers and record and transcribe their music. This is where it all began.

  • Peter Narvaez for “sneaking” a tape out of the MUN Folklore Archive, enabling me, in 1976, to hear Rufus Guinchard for the first time.

  • Kathy Noble accompanied me on many visits to fiddlers’ homes during 1978/79. Her voice can be heard on certain field recordings, chatting with the fiddler’s family.

  • Gerry Strong introduced me to Personal Composer software back in 1996, which enabled me to produce digital music notation for the first time.

  • Christina Smith for her tape recordings of more recent Emile Benoit tunes and for proofing those notations.

  • Eric West for his tape recording of Peter Barron

  • Genevieve Lehr for her tape recording of Val Ryan

  • Daniel Payne for his copy of a tape recording of Rufus Guinchard made by Trevor Bennett

  • Pamela Morgan (Amber Music) for permission to use selections from the CD Vive La Rose by Emile Benoit (1992)
Breakwater Books for permission to use selections from the LP Rufus Guinchard – Newfoundland Fiddler (1979)

  • Paul Cranford in Cape Breton for providing titles to many of the tunes for which I had no name.

  • Graham Wells for additional tune titles.

  • Tom Power, host of Q on CBC Radio, and a big fan of NL tunes, for providing the Foreword to this Collection.

  • Tonya Kearley – I hadn’t made any biographical notes when I visited most of these fiddlers so Tonya went to work and filled in the many gaps. She is a skilled detective and the fiddlers’ biographies exist because of her research.

  • Sol Foster whose expertise in computer programming and music software, and his enthusiasm for traditional NL tunes, have been invaluable.

  • Allan Farrell for setting up and hosting an early incarnation of this project at nltrad.ca

  • Lillian Fidler who put all this together in an excellent website format.
